Mental health doesn’t get the attention it deserves. There has been a positive change in attitudes towards mental health in the past few years. People are now more likely to accept that it is an actual illness and not ‘something in your head’. This change in attitude is attributed to long and tiring efforts made by health organizations to remove the stigma from it. Of course, it’s not just health organizations that have played a role. Tech, and tech companies have like-wise made an impact. Google has recently released a new tool that lets you check if you might be clinically depressed. The clinical depression tool from Google is basically a set of questions that you answer to assess your mental state.

The clinical depression tool from Google is incorporated in Google search and is only available in the US for now. It also only works on mobile devices. In order to access it, you can use a VPN for your iPhone. Likewise, if you’re an Android user, you can use a VPN on your Android phone to access the tool.

Use your preferred VPN tool to change your location to USA on your iPhone or Android phone. Open the Google Search app, or Chrome and type in ‘Clinical Depression’.

The very first result will be a card with a ‘Check if you’re clinically depressed’ button at the bottom. Tap it and go through the PHQ-9 depression screening tool.

Is This Medically Sound

This tool is a clinically validated questionnaire. Not only is it accepted as a valid form of diagnosis in the medical community, it’s also used by doctors. In short, this isn’t like those quizzes you see on Facebook that offer to measure your IQ. Those, and many others like them are not in fact valid.

The results are reliable but that doesn’t mean you should start treating yourself. If the results show that you’re suffering from depression, you should still get in touch with a medical professional trained to treat depression. A doctor may have you undergo additional tests, including tests for other mental illnesses. Additionally, you might find your own responses to the questions might differ somewhat depending on when or in what mood you take the test. If your results at the doctor are different than those you got at home, don’t be alarmed. Instead, make sure your doctor does a thorough job of examining you.

If you’re testing outside the US, a doctor may not accept the results. The tool is valid for US residents but can be helpful for other people.
